Mary broke her hip (actually her femur) on Friday June 12th. I found her when I came by to walk her to my place for dinner. The fire department arrived promptly and transported her to the Honor Health emergency room in south Scottsdale. The next day she had surgery and they put in a titanium rod. After several days of recovery, she was transferred to Plaza Healthcare on Granite Reef not far from her apartment. The next 4 and a half weeks at the Plaza Facility are a pleasant memory. It was refreshing to find a place where you felt the staff really care and had the skills needed to help you get back on your feet literally. They put Mary in a large mobile chair and arranged for us to meet the people who would be taking care of her. We got to know her physical/occupational therapy teams well. They had the unenviable job of challenging her to work through the pain full process of building up her strength so she could walk using a walker. It was a slow and frustrating process. When not doing therapy, we had a great adventure discovery the lovely garden with a grand Ficus tree. We were helped by the CNAs (Certified Nursing Assistants), who would often offer to bring our meals to us when were we wondering about. There was a comradery with the other patients and we got to watch the world cup soccer game in the TV lounge just off the garden. I was able to feed my self while visiting at “The Diner” which did a great job of reminding me of the diners I had visited in the 60s. They even had an old pinball machine. They provided good support service and arranged transportation to Mary’s offsite Dr. visit to the surgeon who repaired her femur. I was even able to use the local WIFI so that we could continue to watch our evening news programs with my phone. Their meals were both good and rich in the protean needed to help her heal. I would be remiss if I did not mention that Mary enjoyed the showers they gave her. They are accomplished using a water proof chair. You can see from the picture that they also helped her celebrate her 95th birthday. All in all, our stay at the Plaza is a very dear memory.
