Horrid care for my family member!!! Doctor wouldn't listen to them. Had to call family member for permission to go to hospital because the doctor said it wasn't necessary. After family approved it, turns out my family member almost died!!! Do not let your family go here!!!!!

Mom has been here about 8 months now. I have some issues! They have gone through several care givers in her Villa within the past few months. Because of that her (all of the residents') care has Suffered quite a bit! None of the caregivers even have a chance to get to know any of the residents. We have come to visit MANY times and had to... help her with bathroom necessities and clean up. She seems to be more dehydrated lately as well. One issue my dad has is that someone keeps changing her TV channels to things she doesn't care for, or understand, and leaving it there. (She likes the 60's-70's mellow hits) ______________________ We had to move Mom here from Tucson Gardens (was Pacifica senior living). So far, she has been acclimatizing rather well. To our knowledge she has not been a problem for the care givers, other than typical issues associated with Dementia. Our only other issues have been fixable. The maintenance workers and grounds keepers always seem to be hard at work. The heating/cooling unit was acting up. FIXED Closet needed a lock. FIXED The cable was not hooked up. FIXED The windows needed new blinds. FIXED Need new cable box channel changer. Fixed The care givers seem to rotate between Villas, but we have had no issues with any of them. Several of them appear to be "English as second language students", but they have all been helpful and appear to care about the residents. Only one has ever appeared to be confused or annoyed with me, but that was because what I said confused her. (supper instead of dinner, coke instead of pop or soda, 'on a tear' instead of having a bad day) There appears to Always be At Least two people within the Villa with the residents. At least one care giver, often two, and the person who cooks and cleans who can help with residents. We were told there is a 1 to 5 ratio of Care givers to residents. MUCH better than the other place! There are only 10 Good Sized rooms in Mom's Villa with one resident per room. There are 14 or 15 Villas. The activities coordinator seems to try to do a variety of things that appeal to the residents. From what I have seen, she has booked musical groups, held art workshops, game days, arranged days when people bring different animals for a type of "petting zoo" experience, and different parties involving the majority of the residents, sort of like a block party. They post fliers for each event on a bulletin board in the Villa. The office staff has always been kind and helpful. The sales manager is an outgoing, sweet lady who went out of her way to try and find a Good Placement for Mom. The nursing staff was very helpful and appears to be on top of things. So Far, we are pleased with our experience here.

EDIT: After 2 years of thriving, Dad was abruptly moved to a different “villa” (ie: house - there are a collection of separate houses on the compound). No one in the family was notified and Dad called very distraught. They literally came in one morning and took him to a room not much bigger than a closet with room only for his bed and a shared bathroom… They did allow Dad to then switch to a different compliant villa with the same size room he had been accustomed and my sisters and I set it up with the familiar furnishings that made Dad feel at home, but all residents in this villa were severe memory care. When we had originally toured, we had asked if Dad would be moved from the villa they were placing him once he qualified for long term care through the state. We were promised that he would not (this was a CRUCIAL part of our choosing this facility). Apparently, however, the Villa Dad was originally in was not in compliance for ALTCS residents. Dad was moved into a house where all residents were severe memory care. There was no one to visit with. No one to laugh with. The “cook” was an inexperienced kid whose previous experience was cooking at a fast food restaurant. The ceiling fan where my dad liked to sit under outside and have a cigarette was broken and never fixed the entire year he was there. In fact, ashtrays outside were never cleaned, the patio chairs were wonky - there was a dirty towel that had been left hanging on the railing that was left there for the remainder of my dad’s stay - over a year. Dad’s room was rarely cleaned and smelled terrible. Needless to say, Dad declined and though he was aging, this move most definitely contributed. He became depressed and was very lonely. The management told me that Dad was on a list to be moved to a more appropriate villa. I never heard a word - not even a check-in and “I’m sorry, but this move is taking longer than expected”. The caregivers were always kind to dad and it was one of these wonderful (very underpaid) folks that asked me if management had notified me (as she had requested), that dad had been falling, wasn’t eating and could no longer transfer from his wheelchair to toilet or bed without assistance. I visited Dad every week without fail, btw, and he never told me of these issues, perhaps so I wouldn’t worry… This caregiver asked me to call 911. I did and my dad was admitted to St. Mary’s and from there into hospice and died within a few weeks. I know that Dad was not going to live forever but I am certain that his quality of care and the maintenance of the villa itself drastically declined when he was moved to a villa where most residents couldn’t speak for themselves. After Dad’s death, we received no condolences only an email stating that some expensive equipment was missing from his room and they wanted it back (this equipment was never in his room) and that we had 4 days (yes - the same days we were scrambling to get dad set up in home for hospice) to move his things out. Great place when your loved one is mentally present and not on ALTCS. Complete FAIL if your loved one is memory care or on state assistance. I thought I had found a wonderful place for my dad but ultimately, when your loved one is declining or on state funded assistance, quality declines.

The transition from personal residence to "Assisted Living" is not one that any of us look forward to. My former spouse has been living at Park Villa's for roughly 1 year. I simply cannot imagine that there is better place for him to live. The ENTIRE staff at Park Villa's has consistently gone out of their way to make his life smoother, easier, happier. The common area is spacious and welcoming, the outdoor area is large and well appointed. Five Star Plus and a Special Thank You to The Team. -Jaxzann Riggs
